Modern Conversation

Write for us

We welcome pitches that make a fresh, well-supported contribution to the study of contemporary conversation, language and social habits. The best proposals are specific, curious and clear about what a reader will understand by the end.

What we welcome

Propose an original article that explains a phrase, compares ways of expressing an idea, explores the background to a conversational form or examines a change in public language. We are interested in nuanced subjects with a clear scope, not sweeping claims about how everyone talks. Useful pitches identify the central question, the intended reader and the main point the article will make.

A strong pitch

Tell us the proposed title, the subject, why it is worth examining and how you would approach it. Include a brief outline of the key sections and note any sources or relevant experience that help establish your angle. Keep the proposal original, careful with cultural context and specific about what is fact, interpretation or personal observation.

How to send it

Send proposals through the Contact page and choose the editorial reason for writing. Please pitch the idea before sending a complete article. A submission is not a promise of publication, and we may ask questions or suggest changes if a proposal is a good fit.
